Edaravone is a new free radical scavenger, first marketed in Japan in April 2001 and used clinically for the treatment of ischaemic strokes. Edaravone exists in the form of an anion, which provides one electron to a free radical for the purpose of scavenging it. Due to its lipophilic molecular structure, it can easily cross the blood-brain barrier to reach brain tissue and has a protective effect on neuronal cell damage caused by cerebral ischaemia.

1. Edaravone used as reagent for detection of reducing carbohydrates by ESI/MALDI -MS.
2. Edaravone inhibits the disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis.
