Fulves trant is an intramuscular drug developed by AstraZeneca and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in April 2002 for the treatment of estrogen receptor-positive metastatic breast cancer in postmenopausal women whose disease has progressed despite anti-estrogen therapy. Estrogen receptors (ER) are present in many breast cancer cells, and estrogen can stimulate the growth of these tumors. Fulves trant is a "pure" estrogen receptor antagonist with no partial estrogen-like agonistic effects. It inhibits the estrogen signaling pathway by binding, blocking and down-regulating the ER. It is the only anti-estrogenic drug that can be widely used in clinical practice after the failure of tamo xifen. Since it is an endocrine therapy, it does not cause the common adverse effects of chemotherapy, and therefore has better patient compliance. A number of clinical studies have found that fulves trant at 250 mg is effective in the second-line treatment of advanced breast cancer and has a stable safety profile.
