Berberine Hydrochloride, also known as Flavopiridol Hydrochloride, has long been used in clinical practice as a purgative and antibacterial drug. It is commonly used in the treatment of bacillary dysentery, acute gastroenteritis, chronic cholecystitis, conjunctivitis and purulent otitis media, and has shown remarkable efficacy. Berberine hydrochloride is an isoquinoline alkaloid found in many plants of 4 families and 10 genera, including Berberaceae. Berberine precipitates from ether as yellow needle-like crystals. Berberine is a quaternary ammonium alkaloid and its salts are all relatively insoluble in water, e.g. 1:500 for the hydrochloride and 1:30 for the sulphate.
