Oxcarbazepine (10,11-dihydro-10-oxo-5H-dibenzo[b,f]azepine-5-carboxamide) exerts its pharmacological effects mainly through its metabolite monohydroxy derivative (MHD). The mechanism of action of oxcarbazepine and MHD is thought to be primarily through blocking voltage-sensitive sodium channels, thereby stabilizing the cell membrane of overexcited neurons inhibiting repetitive neuronal firing and reducing the propagation of synaptic impulses. In addition, the anticonvulsant effect is similarly mediated by increasing potassium conductance and modulating high-voltage activation of calcium channels.

Function and Application of Oxcarbazepine CAS 28721-07-5
1. Oxcarbazepine (10,11-dihydro-10-oxo-5H-dibenzo[b,f]azepine-5-carboxamide), a white to pale yellow crystalline powder, is an antiepileptic drug, a 10-keto derivative of carbamazepine, which is similar in potency to carbamazepine and has the same or slightly stronger action, but it has very few adverse effects. It has a highly selective inhibitory effect on the motor areas of the cortical layer of the brain, preventing the propagation of abnormal electrical waves. It has satisfactory efficacy in epileptic limited or tonic clonic seizures and affective mental disorders, and also has a good analgesic effect on trigeminal neuralgia.
