Gentamicin is a mixture of several antibiotic components produced by fermentation of Mi cromonospora purpurea and other related soil microorganisms (hence its name is spelled with an "i" instead of a " y"). Gentamicins C-1, C-2, and C-1a are most prominent. Gentamicin is the most important of the aminoglycoside antibiotics still in use. Gentamicin was, for example, one of the first antibiotics to have significant activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections. This water-loving, opportunistic pathogen frequently is encountered in burns, pneumonias, and urinary tract infections.

Function and Application of Gentamycin CAS 1403-66-3
1. Gentamicin has antibacterial effects against Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Bacillus pneumoniae, Klebsiella, Aspergillus chimaera, some indole-positive Aspergillus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, some Neisseria, some non-pigmented Serratia and Shigella. Among the Gram-positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus (including β-lactamase-producing strains) is sensitive to this product; Streptococcus (including Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus faecalis, etc.) are resistant to this product. Anaerobic bacteria (Mycobacterium avium), Mycobacterium tuberculosis, rickettsiae, fungi and viruses are also resistant to this product. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella, Serratia and Indo-positive Aspergillus have a high resistance rate to this product. Gentamicin is mainly used for systemic or local infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Shigella dysenteriae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (not effective for central infections).
