Moguisteine is a novel peripheral non-narcotic cough suppressant whose efficacy has been shown to be comparable to that of code in e in experimental models of cough induction in guinea pigs and dogs. It acts neither through opioid receptors nor through cough centres, but probably functions along the bronchial tree by interacting with rapidly adapting irritant receptors. In controlled clinical trials, moguisteine was found to be safe and effective in alleviating cough-related symptoms such as respiratory disturbances due to upper respiratory tract infections, chronic bronchitis, pulmonary fibrosis and malignancies.
