Remetiamide (also known as lamitilon, ramelteon), trade name: Rozerem, chemically known as (S)-N-[2-(1,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2H-indeno-[5,4-b]furan-8-yl)ethyl]propanamide, was approved by the FDA for marketing in the US in September 2005 under the trade name Rozerem for the treatment of difficult-to-sleep type It is also effective in chronic insomnia and short-term insomnia. It selectively agonises melatonin type 1 and type 2 receptors (MT1, MT2) and increases slow wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement sleep (REW), thereby reducing insomnia. Rimantadine is the first non-addictive insomnia treatment not classified as a specifically controlled drug.
