Escitalopram oxalate is the S-isomer metabolite of citalopram, which is the main component of the pharmacological activity of citalopram. Its chemical name is (S)-1-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]-1-(4-fluorophenyl)-1,3-dihydroisobenzofuran-5-carbonitrile oxalate, a new antidepressant developed by the Danish company Lundbeck as a selective 5-hydroxytryptamine reuptake inhibitor with good efficacy in both endogenous and non-endogenous depression.
