Alpha Lipoic acid is a unique anti-free radical substance, often referred to as a broad spectrum antioxidant. It is a vitamin-like substance produced in the body. Unlike other body-produced antioxidants with specific effects, DL-lipoic acid is neither strictly fat-soluble nor water-soluble, which allows it to promote the activity of other antioxidants in the body and is a widely available substitute when antioxidants are insufficient. For example, if the body's stores of vitamin c and vitamin E are low, DL-lipoic acid can provide a temporary supplement. DL-lipoic acid also helps to maintain normal blood sugar levels and prevent serious complications of diabetes. As we age, the body will not be able to produce sufficient DL-lipoic acid to maintain health.

1. Alpha-lipoic acid is also a highly effective antioxidant and has an important role in the prevention and treatment of many diseases.
2. In the field of medicine, alpha-lipoic acid is widely used in the prevention and adjunctive treatment of diabetes and its related complications. It enhances glucose metabolism, attenuates oxidative stress, alleviates symptoms of diabetic neuropathy, prevents diabetic cataracts and prevents diabetic cardiovascular damage.
3. Alpha-Lipoic acid has been used in in vitro lipoylation studies and in the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC)-pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase (PDHK) functional assay. It has also been used to investigate its antioxidative effect on developing cerebellum of rats exposed to arse nic during postnatal period.
