Bosentan is a drug developed by Actelion Switzerland for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. It is a non-selective endothelin receptor antagonist. It reverses the vasoconstrictive and cell proliferation-promoting effects of endothelin-1, as well as its pro-vascular fibrosis effects, and also exerts its effects by modulating a number of other growth factors that affect ion channels in the smooth muscle cell membrane of the vascular wall. Oral administration of this product is considered to be the first-line treatment for pulmonary hypertension and is indicated for the treatment of stage III and IV primary pulmonary hypertension or pulmonary hypertension due to scleroderma.
